Firecrackers sales start, permit sales up

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Oahu residents lined-up and filled stores to get their hands on the New Year’s staple as the day after Christmas marked the start of firecracker sales on the island.

Since the permits are non-refundable, many people wanted to buy firecrackers Saturday when they went on sale.

"This is my first year actually buying fireworks since I moved back home from the mainland and it's my first time actually buying the whole permit, going through all of that,” said Jerry Castillo, a Pacific Fireworks customer. “When I was a kid, there was no such thing as permits."

This year the city sold more than 13,800 permits. That’s up nearly 25 percent from 2014.

"We're hoping for a good year and we did bring extra crackers in so we're hoping it works out good," said Dino Alexakos of Pacific Fireworks.

On Oahu, firecrackers may only be set off from 9 p.m. on New Year's Eve until 1 a.m. on January 1.
