Terry's Take

Movie Review: STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

If you’re a STAR WARS fan, you’ve already seen the new, record breaking movie, and you like it.
For everyone else, if you don’t expect too much, the movie is worth seeing.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is not as good as I wanted it to be nor is it as bad as I feared it would be.
I really liked the new droid (BB-8) plus the performances of the new lead actress, Daisy Ridley, and the veteran star, Harrison Ford.
But the fight scenes are uninspired, the script offers little originality, and the whole movie feels about half an hour too long.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is a critic proof movie if there ever was one. Who cares what reviewers think? Disney hasn’t released even one complete scene for reviewers to use, and the legions of fans who love the film have turned it into something far more significant than a mere movie.
In a way, I envy the loyal fans of STAR WARS. It must feel very good to connect with millions of other people who feel these movies so deeply.

Unknown voice: Who are you?
Rey: I’m no one.

The two major new characters are Daisy Ridley as Rey, a scavenger in the desert who becomes a resistance leader, and John Boyega as Finn, a storm trooper who rejects his evil heritage.

Finn: I was raised to do one thing, but I’ve got nothin’ to fight for.

Although they are not a romantic couple, it’s refreshing to have an interracial pair as main characters, and it’s even better that the woman is the big hero.

Han Solo:  We’re home.

The events of this film take place thirty years after what happened the first Star Wars movie.
But Harrison Ford’s Han Solo is still a leader.

Han Solo:  Those stories about what happened. It’s all true…..You might need this. (He gives Rey a light saber.)

And Adam Driver is also quite good as the villain, Kylo Ren.

Kylo Ren: Nothing will stand in our way. I will finish what you started.

Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia is now General Leia, but she appears in only a couple of scenes and Mark Harmon as Luke Skywalker doesn’t have even a line of dialog.

THE FORCE AWAKENS is making crazy money at the box office, and four more updates are already in the works. So the Force will be with us for years to come.
