The Konawaena girl's basketball team arrived in Washington D.C. on Saturday, ahead of the Wildcats' opening game in the prestigious Title IX Tournament basketball invitational.

Konawaena, winners of the 2015 HHSAA State Basketball Championship, are the first Hawaii-based team to play in the tournament, which honors the pioneers of the landmark Title IX amendment, including the late former Hawaii congresswoman Patsy Mink. Mink was the first woman of Asian-American ancestry to serve in Congress.

"I think that it is significant because a number of our girls, you know, local girls of Filipino and Asian ancestry, and I think it really gives the opportunity for our girls and our program, (which are) are beneficiaries of Title IX," said Bill Trumbo, the school's athletics director. "It's really a reward to our past successes. And then representing, you know Hawaii's very special. Representing a whole team of gender equity becomes very special as well."

60 teams, including 48 at the varsity level, are scheduled to take part in the tournament. Trumbo says the Wildcats will play in the invitational's Patsy Mink Bracket.

"It's a very elite field and we get the chance to redeem our only lost from last year, if we can go this far," Trumbo said.

In addition to basketball, the girls will also tour parts of the nation's capitol and take part in workshops designed to foster leadership skills, public speaking and financial literacy.
