WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Some are calling it the wettest run on the planet.

On Saturday nearly 700 Honolulu residents and visitors gathered in Waikiki to take part in the state’s first Water for the World Run 5K. The non-competitive run/walk started at Kapiolani Park, took participants around the Waikiki Zoo and ended at the Waikiki Shell.

“Approximately twice the population of the United States worldwide does not have access to clean water and we take it for granted that whenever we turn on a faucet, there will always be clean water to drink,” said Joshua Goodson, co-founder of Water for the World Run in a statement. “Our mission is to give the gift of clean water to those without.”

The individual cost for the run/walk was $34.99 which included the registration fee, a two-liter water bag and other giveaways. The water bag weighed nine pounds and was carried by the runners throughout the course. This simulated water carried by those in developing countries for their families.

Water for the World Run will donate a portion of the proceeds collected from the event to Water.org, the international nonprofit organization founded by Gary White and actor Matt Damon to increase clean water education and programs across the world.
