Haiku man given 10-year prison sentence for assault of teen
WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) - A Maui County man accused of having sex with a teenager and giving the girl methamphetamine has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The Maui News reports (http://bit.ly/1ki6Kac ) 24-year-old Clifford Muller was sentenced Tuesday. He pleaded no contest to first-degree assault and promotion of a dangerous drug as part of a plea deal that dropped a sexual assault charge against him.
Muller is charged with assaulting the girl in 2014 when he was 23 and she was 15.
Deputy Prosecutor Kim Whitworth says Muller had a sexual relationship with the girl and provided her with methamphetamine, leading her to addiction. Whitworth says the teen suffers from permanent brain damage from the drug.
Muller's attorney says her client believed he loved the girl and that they were boyfriend and girlfriend.
