Spear tip returned to King Kamehameha statue

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - The statue of King Kamehameha in Hilo is no longer empty-handed following a ceremony to reattach the spear tip that was taken almost four months ago.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports the spear was reattached during a Saturday ceremony organized by the Kamehameha Schools East Hawaii Alumni Association, which maintains the statue.

Association members are fundraising for other repairs that they hope will be completed before Kamehameha Day in June 2016.

A Jan. 25 trail has been set for 31-year-old William Roy Carroll, who pleaded not guilty to property damage and theft charges related to the incident.
