MAUNA KEA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the summit areas of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island until 6 p.m. Monday due to freezing rain and black ice.

The advisory covers the areas above 12,000 feet.

The Mauna Kea Weather Center reported Sunday afternoon that the access road to the summit remained closed at the Visitor Information Station at the 9,200 foot level. There was thick ice on the roadway and forecasts called for below freezing temperatures for much of the day. Black ice cannot be plowed; instead, authorities have to wait for sunshine warmer weather to melt the ice.

It is unknown when the road will be reopened.
