HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Brazilian surfer Adriano de Souza claimed more than just a tournament title at Ehukai Beach Park on Thursday morning.
De Souza, who defeated fellow countryman Gabriel Medina in the final round of today's Billabong Pipe Masters, also became the second-ever Brazilian to win the WSL's World Title.
Though Medina's performance wasn't good enough to win the tournament, he did take home the 2015 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.
After Medina defeated Australia's Mick Fanning in the semifinals on a full rotation in mid-air, de Souza needed a victory in his semifinal round against Hawaii's Mason Ho in order to secure the world title. He delivered, maintaining a narrow lead until the final buzzer, when he was greeted on the beach by dozens of fans and supporters.
The two victories in the semifinal round pitted the pair of Brazilian surfers against one another in the final round, with De Souza prevailing.
