HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Two-time world bodyboarding champion, Andre Botha was recognized by Mayor Caldwell and the city today at Honolulu Hale for his heroic acts.

On December 6, the South African professional body boarder swam out into rough waters at Pipeline to rescue Evan Geiselman, who wiped out in 20-25 foot surf.

Once Botha reached Geiselman, he kept himself and the unconscious surfer's head above water.

Until lifeguards reached the pair, Botha gave Geiselman rescue breaths while trying to swim to shore in the pounding waves, which is no easy task.

"I don't think I've ever expended that amount of energy in that short amount of time ever," Botha said.
