HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Circuit Court judge on Wednesday sentenced a homeless man convicted in a 2014 killing in Chinatown to 20 years in prison.
Michael Abella was found guilty in August of manslaughter.
Witnesses said on July 17, 2014, 57-year-old Shelton Higa -- who's also homeless -- was standing on the corner of Smith and North Pauahi Streets when Abella approached him from behind, struck him on the head with a beer bottle and then left. Abella later returned and punched Higa several times in the head, the witness testified.
Higa was taken to the Queen's Medical Center where he fell into a coma due to severe bleeding in the brain. He died on July 29, 2014.
