Pro surfer learns of brother's death before paddling out at Billabong Pipe Masters

NORTH SHORE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Thousands packed the shorelines this morning on the North Shore for the Billabong Pipe Masters while contest favorite, Mick Fanning competed with a heavy heart.

Prior to paddling out against Jamie O'Brien, Fanning got word that his 43-year-old brother, Peter, had passed away in Australia. His cause of death was not publicly released.

This is not the first time Fanning has lost a brother. Another brother died in a car accident in 1998.

But that did not stop the 3-time world champion from coming out on top over O'brien. Fanning is one of three surfers left in the running for the world title.
