Former Maui pilots killed in separate medevac crashes on mainland

PHOENIX, ARIZONA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two former Maui helicopter pilots have died in separate medevac crashes on the mainland.

Thomas Hampl was one of four people killed Thursday night when a medical helicopter crashed in central California. The 49-year-old flew for Air Maui during part of his 10-year stint on the Valley Isle.

On Tuesday night, former Kihei resident David Schneider and a flight nurse died when their helicopter went down in rugged terrain east of Phoenix, Ariz.

Schneider was also a pilot for Air Maui at one point.

Schneider's neighbor Jason Lee said the 57-year-old moved to the mainland a few months ago and that saving people was what he loved to do.

Air Maui on Wednesday night issued a statement saying it was mourning the passing of two dear friends and that its condolences go out to the families in this time of sorrow.

The causes of both crashes remain under investigation.
