HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Law enforcement officials say an IRS scam that has been plaguing Hawaii for years has gotten more aggressive and persistent.
The scammers call and claim to be an IRS agent saying you owe back taxes.
Then the scammers say if you do not pay up over the phone, you could be sued or even arrested.
HPD Captain John McCarthy says calls have been very persistent these last three weeks because people tend to be more susceptible to scams during the holidays.
"I suggest don't engage these people," McCarthy said. " They're experts, they're professionals at what they do. This is all they do, they do it for a living. Hang up, don't give them any personal information, don't give them any information whatsoever."
He suggests you hang up and call the IRS directly to verify.
