High surf triggers start of Pipe Invitational

NORTH SHORE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Massive surf on the North Shore on Wednesday has triggered the start of the Pipe Invitational, with more than 30 surfers competing for two wildcards into the Billabong Pipe Masters.

The competition is slated to start at 8 a.m. with 10- to 15-foot surf at Pipeline.

On Wednesday morning, surfers Sunny Garcia, Griffin Colapinto, Nathan Fletcher and Jack Freestone will be among the first to compete. Mick Fanning, Adriano de Souza, Gabriel Medina, Owen Wright and Julian Wilson are also in the running for the 2015 World Surf League title at the Billabong Pipe Masters.

A big swell is picking up surf, which is expected to peak Wednesday with waves reaching up to 30 feet.
