Isaac Fleming stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, seven assists and six rebounds, Aaron Valdes added a season-high 33 points and the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior basketball team dominated interstate rival UH-Hilo, 86-67, on Tuesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Fleming's seven assists were a career-high and his six rebounds equaled a career best he set last Christmas against Colorado. Valdes was within one of his career-best 34 points when he took a seat to a nice ovation from the crowd with 5:32 to play.
Patrick Ball led the Vulcans (0-6) with 20 points with Vandyon Lockett adding 13 more.
Valdes had his way with the Vulcans in the post and on the perimeter. After a slow start by the 'Bows (6-1), he broke the drought with a drop step bucket in the post, then would hit an elbow three pointer to give UH a 21-17 lead midway through the first half.
Back-to-back layups and a three pointer from Jordan Russell kept UH-Hilo in the game, but a quick 8-0 spurt put the 'Bows back in the driver's seat. UH also took advantage of six straight UH-Hilo turnovers during the first half and grabbed a 13-point lead. Valdes would finish the half with a flurry, getting a pair of put-back hoops to up his total to 22 points heading into the break.
In the second half, the 'Bows used a 12-0 run capped by a Fleming three pointer to extend to a 19-point lead. UH emptied its bench late and cruised to the win.
Stefan Jovanovic, seeing increased minutes due to the absence of Stefan Jankovic, delivered 10 points on a perfect 5-5 shooting, feasting in the post along with Valdes to the tune a 54-18 team advantage in the paint.
The 'Bows return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 12 against Hawai'i Pacific University. Tip off at the Stan Sheriff Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
