Two University of Hawai'i women's volleyball players--Olivia Magill and Nikki Taylor--both earned American Volleyball Coaches Association Pacific North All-Region honors on Monday. It is the third time that Magill has garnered all-region honors and it is the first all-region accolade for Taylor.
Magill is one of just two Rainbow Wahine to start all 29 matches for UH this seaon. She led the Big West Conference in both hitting percentage (.431) and blocks per set (1.49). Overall, the senior from Shoreline, Wash. tallied 265 kills and a team-high 148 total blocks (18 solo).
"It's quite an honor to make the Pacific North All-Region team." says Magill. "It is an extremely competitive region. I am proud of myself, but I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for my teammates and coaches making me better. "
Taylor, the Big West's Player of the Year, had a standout season for Hawai'i leading UH with 427 kills; 4.36 kills per set; and 42 service aces. She is second on the team with 203 digs and 112 blocks. For her career, The Honolulu, O'ahu native and Kaiser High School graduate, is just 50 kills away from becoming the 19th Rainbow Wahine to become a member of the 1,000 kill club.
"I am very humbled to receive this award. But it is also very fulfilling to know that one of the things I've worked so hard to achieve during the season has been accomplished," says Taylor. "However, there is still more work to be done! I'd like to thank my teammates and coaches for without them I would not be in this position."
"Congratulations to Olivia and Nikki for this award," says head coach Dave Shoji. "Their steady, stellar play this year has allowed our team to win the Big West Conference and to advance to the NCAA Regionals."
The Rainbow Wahine have now earned 81 total all-region honors in its program history. Fellow Big West player, Long Beach State's Jenelle Hudson was named to the All-Pacific South Region team.
No. 7 Hawai'i faces No. 8 Penn State this Friday, Dec. 11 in the NCAA Regional round of 16.
