North Shore surfing legend Johnny-Boy Gomes has been charged with third-degree assault after allegedly getting into a fight with another surfer in Waikiki, sources say.

The 50-year-old, whose real name is John Davis Gomes, was arrested Saturday night originally on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police said on Nov. 3, Gomes punched another man in the face and held him under water. Sources said Gomes then paddled to shore and ran from the scene.

Gomes has a winning track record in surf competitions, having won the World Cup at Sunset Beach in 1993 and the Pipe Masters in 1997. However, he also has a criminal record with eight prior arrests and three convictions.

He was released on a $2,000 bail.
