KALIHI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Ohana gathered at Kalihi Uka Community Park to celebrate Mele Kalihi Maka Saturday afternoon.
The event, coordinated by Vice Speaker John Mizuno, included food, entertainment, arts and crafts, games and giveaways.
"This will be our first Christmas Celebration for Kalihi Valley, most of the students at Kalihi Uka and surrounding schools participant in the free meal program. Many come from low income households. Despite the difficult challenges many of our students face, the State DOE recognized Kalihi Uka Elementary school as a "Strive HI" school, one of only several in the State, for achieving a high index score in student testing," Mizuno said.
Kalihi Uka Elementary School Principal, Laura Ahn, attended the event and presented scholarships to Kalihi students to enroll in Moments Unforgettable, a local performing arts academy and dance school.
400 loaves of bread, and hundreds of snacks such as, potato chips, donuts, and bags of pretzels were donated by Hawaii Food Service Alliance and Hawaiian Values Company. These items were given free to Kalihi Valley residents.
Comedian Augie T, a Kalihi native, emceed the event.
Mizuno said, "When organizations and caring people work together for the betterment of our community this reflects a success story in Kalihi Valley."
