A 36-year-old Lahaina man walked away from a paraglider crash Monday with minor injuries.
The crash happened Monday afternoon above Lahainaluna. Officials say two students from Lahaina Intermediate School saw a black paraglider collapse and spiral down out of sight near the famous Lahainaluna “L” on the mountain above the schools
A fire department helicopter that was at a brushfire in Kahikinui was dispatched about 3:10 p.m., and spotted a male paraglider giving them the sign that he was OK, several hundred yards behind the "L".
The fire department's helicopter airlifted the man to the football field at Lahainaluna High School with non-life threatening injuries.
Paramedics evaluated him, but the man declined transport by paramedics. He was driven by a family member to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The man was paragliding by himself and was searching the area for thermal updrafts when he encountered a strong downdraft that collapsed his wing. He landed hard in a fairly flat area above the "L" and was sitting up when firefighters got to him.
