Big Island police have located and arrested the suspect accused of murdering a 39-year-old man in Hilo last week.
Officers found Kalani Lono Kaohimaunu, 34, around 10:15 a.m. Sunday in the Kalapana area. He was later charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, ownership of a firearm prohibited and place to keep a firearm.
Authorities were looking for Kaohimaunu since the incident happened on Thursday, Nov. 26. Around 10:20 p.m. that night, officers arrived at a home on the 100 block of West Kawailani Street where they found an unresponsive man outside the home with a gunshot wound. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and said a car fled from the scene.
The victim, identified as 39-year-old Keola Penovaroff, was taken to the Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine his exact cause of death.
Kaohimaunu’s bail has been set at $1 million.
