To show support and solidarity with the citizens of Paris, Maui residents gathered in Kihei to make a mile-long lei on Sunday.
The project was started by the Cynthia Rose Foundation and Nalu’s Shore Grill. Once the lei is complete, it will be sent to Paris with the Hawaiian youth delegation from Maui.
Volunteers like Sherrie Austin are sending the lei as a symbol of aloha in light of the recent tragedy.
“Sending this lei with everyone's energy, in it everyone's thoughts, everyone's intentions,” Austin said. “Anyone who even thinks about it is woven into the intention of this lei. And I think that will be felt by the people of Paris when they receive it.”
Organizers say the volunteers completed about an eight of the lei over the weekend. The lei-making will continue for the next couple of days.
