Saturday morning, firefighters rescued a male visitor caught in a rip current at Hamoa Beach, in East Maui.
A firefighter paddled out about 150 yards with a rescue board and brought the man safely back to shore.
The 34-year-old man is visiting from Salt Lake City, Utah, and was bodyboarding with two friends when he was caught by the rip current. The man’s friends were able to make it back on their own, but the he was sucked farther out.
Hana firefighters were conducting ocean training activities at the popular beach when someone noticed a bodyboarder waving his arms over his head.
He did not require medical attention. All three were not using swim fins.
