Nainoa Thompson honored for life’s accomplishments

The West Honolulu Rotary Club honored Nainoa Thompson with the David Malo award at the rotary club’s 65th anniversary Friday night at the Hale Koa hotel.

The David Malo award is given each year and recognizes an individual of Hawaiian ancestry whose accomplishments and life have portrayed the idea of high achievement in fields such as art, education, sports or community service.

Thompson, president of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and pwo master navigator of the Hokulea, recently returned to Honolulu following the completion of the South African leg of the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage.

David Malo, born in Keauhou, North Kona Hawaii, lived from 1793 to 1853 and was a leading Native Hawaiian historian.
