Big Island firefighters extinguish fire from structure occupied by squatters

HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hawaii County firefighters extinguished a fire early Thursday from an abandoned building occupied by squatters in Hilo.

Firefighters responded to the alarm around 1:20 a.m. and arrived to the structure on the 300 block of Ohai Street about 10 minutes later.

They found heavy smoke coming from a bedroom window and light smoke coming from other windows and the front door of the single-family residential structure. Firefighters extinguished the flames by 2:20 a.m.

Police officers assisted two female occupants out of the house. Both were uninjured. Fire officials said there may have been a third occupant, a male, who notified the females and left the scene prior to authorities’ arrival.

Fire officials said the fire was contained to one bedroom, a connecting bathroom and portions of the hallway. The cause of the fire, however, has yet to be determined.
