KALIHI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A possible robbery suspect was arrested early Monday for the attempted murder of a police officer.
Police say the arresting officer was driving along King Street near Puuhale Road about 12:30 a.m. when he stopped to question two men who he believed matched the description of the suspects in Monday morning's Aloha Gas station robbery on nearby School Street. In that incident, one of two robbers pulled a gun on a store clerk and they got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.
One of the men the officer stopped to question fled on foot and jumped the fence into the property of the Aloha Medical and Pharmaceutical Supplies.
A woman who works there called police when she saw the suspect via surveillance cameras on the property, then told the 911 operator to send backup for the pursuing officer after she saw the suspect hit the cop several times after he caught up with him in the adjacent driveway.
She said she later learned from police that the suspect had tried to grab the officer's gun at one point.
Investigators believe the men were headed to rob the Aloha Gas station located just several feet away from where the arresting officer stopped them, thus thwarting another potential robbery.
The suspect, 41, was booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer, four outstanding warrants and two drug offenses.
Police say the officer suffered only minor injuries to his body and was not transported to the hospital.
The witness says she is grateful the officer wasn't seriously injured and wants to let the police know that she and the community are thankful for their work in helping to keep them safe.
