HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers stretched their undefeated streak to 9-0 on Sunday in a 27-10 victory over Marcus Mariota and the Tennessee Titans.
Newton, perhaps one of the NFL's leading MVP candidates through nine weeks, threw for 217 yards and a touchdown on 21/26 passing, though he was sacked a season-high five times. Newton also ran for a score late in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Mariota, taking the field for the first time since being named the AFC's Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday, was 16-24 passing, with 185 yards and a touchdown. He rushed five times for 24 yards.
The Titans, despite being 2-7 on the year, are still only three games out of first place in the AFC South. Division leader Indianapolis, which had a bye on Sunday, is 4-5 this season, though the Colts won their first game against Tennessee earlier this year.
