The Hawaiian Word of the Day is Kaimuki. Kaimuki is a small shield volcano, whose summit is just seaward of the Kaimuki fire station. According to mo'olelo, Kaimuki gets its name because menehune used to cook roots of ti leaves in an underground oven in that area. Kaimuki is also home to Kaimuki High School, which began as an annex to the overcrowded McKinley High School, and became a free-standing institution in 1943. The Hawaiian Word of the Day is Kaimuki.
