KAILUA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A dog who was believed to be lost after three friends had to be rescued off Lanikai in Kailua has been found alive.
On Tuesday, three friends went kayaking to the Mokulua Islands around sundown when their kayak started sinking about halfway into the trip. The victims were rescued later that night, but were unable to find their dalmatian, who goes by the name Molly.
But Molly was able to make the mile swim back to shore in rough surf that night.
A veterinary clinic in Kailua confirms the dog was brought in by good Samaritans, who reportedly found her near Buzz's restaurant.
But now Molly is at the center of a canine custody battle.
Keely Ramstead, the woman who brought Molly along on the kayak trip, says the dog has been claimed by previous owners.
Sources say it was the previous owners information that was still listed on the dog's microchip, and they were the ones who picked her up when they got the call.
Ramstead says she plans to go to police to get her dog back.
