Raw sewage gathers on a residential property in Enchanted Lake
In addition to raw sewage, residents say there are toilet paper and chicken bones floating on their properties.
ENCHANTED LAKE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Raw sewage from an unknown source was spilling out into the parking lot of Enchanted Lake Shopping Center on Tuesday, flowing through residential properties and then onto the ocean.
Steve Hawkes owns a home right next to the shopping center and he said he's been grappling with the issue for days.
He said the issue got very bad around Halloween -- that's when he called 911.
Crews responded after he called, and Hawkes thought they cleaned it up. But he said the problem returned after heavy rains over the weekend -- and it's only getting worse.
"Everything that comes from the shopping center, goes through our three easements, we have three houses. Goes into the stream, goes into Enchanted Lake, and everything from Enchanted Lake goes into the ocean," Hawkes said. "I'm an ocean guy and I don't want that stuff in the ocean, that's disgusting."
Hawkes said in addition to raw sewage, he's found toilet paper on his property and chicken bones. Plus, he and his neighbors said the smell has been horrendous.
Hawkes said he has talked to the Department of Land and Natural Resources and the state Department of Health in addition to contacting police to try to get answers.
On Tuesday, Hawkes said he and his neighbors sent a letter to the property owners demanding that they fix the problem immediately because of health concerns.
Hawaii News Now has reached out to property management and left a message, but has not heard back from them yet.
