KIHEI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 36-year-old man is facing several charges for allegedly robbing a cottage and taking off in the owner's van in Kihei on Nov. 6, Maui police said.
The suspect is identified as Nicholas Neely of Kihei.
Police said at around 10:40 a.m., the victim was returning home from when she heard a family member scream from the back cottage and then saw the suspect running away from the cottage toward her van.
The woman said the man then jumped into her van and started to drive away, and when she tried to stop the van, he tried to hit her with a baseball bat.
A neighbor helped hold Neely down until police arrived.
Neely was later arrested and charged for first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and unauthorized control of a propelled motor vehicle.
His bail is set at $16,000.
