CAPTAIN COOK, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A 62-year-old man died following a single-motorcycle crash Saturday morning in the Captain Cook area of the Kona District.

The victim has been identified as David Morse of Oceanview.

Police said Morse was ejected from the motorcycle when he lost control after failing to negotiate a turn causing the motorcycle to run off the roadway and down a large embankment.

Police say he sustained head injuries from the collision and that speed and inattention were factors in the crash.

Morse was traveling south on Mamalahoa Highway, Route 11, just north of the 93-mile marker.

He was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:20 p.m.

This is the 17th traffic fatality this year compared with 11 at this time last year.
