Second-half surge propels UNLV to 41-21 win over Rainbow Warriors

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Rainbow Warrior football team turned the ball over 3 times, allowed 27 second half points, and lost to UNLV, 41-21, in the first game since the firing of former head coach Norm Chow.

UNLV opened the game with an 8-play, 87-yard drive, capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run by Xzavier Campbell to make it 7-0.

Hawaii, making their debut under interim coach Chris Naeole, scored 8 minutes into the second quarter on a 34-yard touchdown run by Harris, who totaled 101 yards on 15 carries in the first half. Ikaika Woolsey, who started the game on Saturday after Max Wittek was benched by Naeole, was 10-18 for 66 yards and an interception in the first half.

UNLV, though, found a rhythm offensively in the second half. A 75-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Blake Decker to receiver Devonte Boyd extended the Rebels third quarter lead to 24-14, and a 17-point fourth quarter put the game out of reach for the Rainbow Warriors, who have now lost seven consecutive football games.

Melvin Davis scored a pair of second quarter touchdowns for Hawaii, his fourth and fifth scores of the year.

The Rainbow Warriors finish the 2015 season with three straight games at Aloha Stadium against opponents with a combined 7-20 record.
