WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The state Department of Health says Makittii Hawaii in Waikiki can re-open after fixing a host of food safety violations, including insects and rodents near food and inadequate hand washing.

The eatery was told to close its doors Nov. 6, after the eatery failed to show progress after multiple inspections.

Health officials visited the eatery, at 2380 Kuhio Ave., on Oct. 13 after a customer reported getting a food-borne illness there.

Inspections found a host of problems, including inadequate hand washing and hand washing facilities, improper temperatures for hot and cold foods, foods not protected from contamination, unsanitary food equipment, and an insect and rodent problem.

Four follow-up inspections found ongoing violations.

The buffet restaurant’s food permit is temporarily suspended until all violations are corrected and “the facility can demonstrate managerial control over its food operations,” health department officials said in a news release Friday.

The eatery has also been fined $35,000.

This was the third red “closed” placard the Health Department has issued this year. The state launched its restaurant placarding system in 2014.
