Organizations give away thousands of plants to celebrate Arbor Day

Arbor Day in Hawaii takes place in November, the start of the rainy season, making it an ideal time to plant a tree, environmental organizations say.

On Saturday, several organizations – including the Hawaiian Electric Company, Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program, University of Hawaii urban garden center, Wahiawa Botanical Garden and Waimea Valley – are teaming up to give away a total of 3,000 native plants, fruit and spice trees, palms, exotic trees and flowering shrubs.

The giveaway will take place at the following locations:

Waianae:
Hawaiian Electric Kahe Power Plant – 7 a.m.

Pearl City:
Urban Garden Center – 7 a.m.

Honolulu:
McKinley High/Community School for Adults – 7 a.m.

Kailua:
Hawaiian Electric Koolau Base Yard – 7 a.m.

Wahiawa:
Wahiawa Botanical Garden – 9 a.m.

Haleiwa:
Waimea Valley – 9 a.m.
