Fire investigators can't determine cause of Maui house fire

KIHEI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Fire investigators say they can't pinpoint exactly what caused a Maui home to go up in flames on Thursday afternoon.

The fire broke out inside a two-story home just after 3 p.m. on Kawailani Circle in Kihei. When fire crews arrived on scene, flames were coming from the first floor but quickly spread throughout the rest of the home, burning many of the belongings inside.

One person was home at the time and was able to get out safely. The family who lives in the house is new to Hawaii, and had just moved to the Valley Isle on Wednesday.

Members of the Jackson family say they came home from a trip to the beach, only to find their new home scorched by flames.

"We just moved here from Alaska yesterday and everything was in that room, and it's gone," Oakley Jackson said.

Jackson says the end of a bed caught fire, but they don't know how or what sparked the flames.

Total damage is estimated at $300,000.
