A man who was critically injured in an assault on Halloween has died from his injuries.

Alfred Vea, 49, of Hilo, was pronounced dead at The Queen's Medical Center on Oahu at 10:34 a.m. on Wednesday.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office is scheduled to conduct an autopsy on Thursday to determine the exact cause of death. The case has been reclassified to a second-degree murder.

The suspect, 31-year-old Kallen Imade of Mountain View, remains at the Hilo police cellblock without charges while detectives continue the investigation.

At 11:30 p.m. on October 31, South Hilo Patrol officers responded to a report of an unconscious man in a parking lot on the 100 block of Hema Street.

Witnesses reported that the victim had been involved in an affray with another man and that the other man had left the area.

Vea was taken to Hilo Medical Center with a head injury and later transferred to Queen's.

Imade turned himself in to police on November 3.
