The search for two 18-year-old hikers reported missing overnight on the Laie summit ended safely Wednesday after the pair walked out of the trail on their own, Honolulu police said.

Police sent out an alert Wednesday morning, asking for the public’s help in locating the hikers, Zeph McKee and Justice Royer. According to police, McKee and Royer left the BYU-Hawaii campus on Monday at around 3 p.m. to go hiking at the Laie summit.

On Tuesday at 3 p.m., McKee had texted his father to say that they would be back on campus by 7 p.m., but they never returned and no one was able to contact them, police said.

About a dozen Honolulu Fire Department personnel were dispatched at around 6:45 a.m. to assist with the search. But by 10 a.m., both of the hikers walked out of the trail on their own and were not injured.
