Port Elizabeth -

The voyaging canoe, Hokulea, has departed Port Elizabeth on Tuesday for a 186 mile journey to Mossel Bay.

Port Elizabeth sits along the southeast coast of South Africa.

A low pressure system inhibited travel for the Hokulea causing the crews to endured extremely frigid weather for the past two days. Temperatures were reported to be in the low fifties during the day and the low forties at night.

“With the wind chill factor, it must have been around 30 degrees, which really was a rude awakening for us warm-blooded Hawaiians who live in the tropics,” said master navigator, Kalepa Baybayan. “But the crew is enduring well.”

Following their stop in Mossel Bay crews plan to continue along the coast to the Cape of Good Hope and then to Cape Two for a final landfall.
