Local Connection: Maui Police Department

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Maui police department is facing a scandal that threatens to undermine the public's faith and trust in law enforcement.

Two police officers were arrested on suspicion of abusing their power. One is being investigated for possibly stealing from a driver he pulled over in a traffic stop and the other for bribing a witness in that case.

We reported the facts of those disturbing cases last week, but what was remarkable was how we learned about it: the arrests were announced by the police department.

The names of the officers were revealed and mug shots were released without media having to ask for them.

New police chief Tivoli Faaumu also posted a video - on his department website and on social media.  In the video he declared zero tolerance for corrupt behavior, but also congratulated the vast majority of his officers for serving with integrity and honor.

In addition to that transparency, Maui PD is leading the way in other reforms. The department is moving to equip officers with body cams and has trained field officers how to diffuse conflict with suspects who are mentally ill to prevent unnecessary violence.

Experts say transparency and being open to reform will reassure the public that their police department is truly there to protect them, not itself.

We hope other law enforcement leaders are paying attention to Maui's example.
