BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Wildlife officials are investigating an incident off a remote area of the Big Island in which a swimmer says he was bitten on his foot.

The man, 54, was in the water Tuesday morning at Kehena Beach in an area called Middle Bay. He told emergency responders that he was wearing fins, and whatever bit him ripped off one of the fins, injuring his ankle. The swimmer waved for help, and other beachgoers assisted him back to shore.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources will attempt to determine what kind of bite the swimmer suffered. Wildlife experts have not ruled out the possibility of it being from a shark.
