Local business owners team up for 4th Annual Turkey Drive

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Three local business owners are teaming up for the Fourth Annual Turkey Drive to collect frozen turkeys to benefit Hawaii families during the holiday season.

Chris Day, owner of the Oahu Swim Academy, Matt Johnson, owner of Oahu Fresh, and Don "Murph" Murphy, owner of Murphy's Bar and Grill will all be participating in this year's drive.

Since the Annual Turkey Drive began in 2012, it has collected more than one ton of food for the Hawaii Foodbank. This year's goal is to collect 1,500 pounds of food in one day. Day, Johnson, and Murphy are looking to double their efforts to provide holiday season meals to hungry families in Hawaii with some great incentives.

Murphy's Bar and Grill will be offering a complimentary $5 gift certificate for every frozen turkey donated. For those who donate more than five frozen turkeys, Oahu Fresh will offer a free one week subscription of locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables, and the Oahu Swim Academy will offer one free private swim lesson and a $40 pair of swim goggles.

The Fourth Annual Turkey Drive will take place on Wednesday, November 11, 2015. Donations can be dropped off at the following locations:

  • 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.: Hawaii Foodbank, 2611 Kilihau Street
  • 12 p.m. - 6 p.m.: Oahu Fresh office at 916 Kaaahi Place
  • 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.: Murphy's Bar and Grill at 2 Merchant Street

From 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Chris Day and Matt Johnson will be driving around the Honolulu area with the Oahu Fresh delivery van to pick up frozen turkeys and non-perishable food directly from donors.

To schedule a pick up, email TurkeyDrive2015@gmail.com.

The Hawaii Foodbank is the only nonprofit 501(c)(3) agency on Oahu that collects, warehouses and distributes mass quantities of both perishable and nonperishable food to help feed Hawaii's hungry. Donated and purchased foods are distributed to over 220 member agencies on Oahu and Kauai. Last year, the Hawaii Foodbank distributed over 12.2 million pounds of food including over 4.3 million pounds of fresh produce to those needing food assistance in Hawaii.
