A Hawaii boxer who slipped into a coma in August while training in Thailand and whose family struggled to get him back to the islands is now awake and alert, his family told Hawaii News Now.

Boxer Kalae McShane’s coma was linked to an illness.

The McShanes made public pleas for help after struggling to cover the cost of his care and medical flight back to Hawaii, and then after local hospitals said they couldn’t admit him if they were to transport him back to the islands.

Earlier this month, he was admitted to the Queen’s Medical Center.

And McShane’s family say he has now been transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Denver.

The boxer can’t walk yet, according to his family, but he’s moving his arms and legs and is talking.

The McShane family said the boxer could be in rehabilitation for up to three months.
