WAILUKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Emergency officials have identified the man who died Thursday in a Wailuku house fire as Shiro "Sam" Hironaka, former head of American Savings Bank.

Hironaka was 94.

Fire fighters were called to the home on Naniluna Place about 4:35 p.m. Thursday, and attempted to gain entry into the residence but the bottom unit was engulfed in flames with thick smoke.

A woman living upstairs was able to exit the residence and told fire crews that a man may still be in the downstairs unit.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire and enter the residents and that is where investigators located the male victim inside.

Damages are estimated at $630,000.00 to the residence and contents.

Hironaka’s cause of death is pending autopsy results.
