Honolulu fire crews were still dousing smoldering hotspots Wednesday at the scene of a massive warehouse and lumber yard blaze in Mapunapuna.

Fire investigators are also trying to determine the cause of the fire, which started about 6:18 p.m. Tuesday at the ABC Supply Co., Inc.

It took 66 firefighters from 19 fire companies nearly three hours to bring the flames under control Tuesday, Fire Department spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said.

Company workers said the fire started in a building where several flammable roofing compounds were located.

The flammable roofing solvents, adhesives, and lumber helped fuel the fire, they said, and windy conditions quickly fanned the flames to an adjacent front showroom and then to a main office facility.

Three workers who were on the property when the fire started were able to get out without being injured.

An ABC Supply manager said the fire appeared to worsen when various flammable roofing solvents and adhesives ignited.

About 6:30 p.m., firefighters asked Hawaiian Electric to cut power to the facility for safety reasons. That forced an outage of about 150 customers, according to HECO officials. Power was eventually restored around 3 a.m.

By 9:15 p.m., the fire was under control thanks to "multiple master stream and ladder pipe operations" applying "large volumes of water on the fire," Jenkins said.

With the threat of fire's expansion and further explosions contained, area businesses were able to re-open Wednesday, after being evacuated Tuesday night.

However, the road fronting ABC Supply Co. at Mapunapuna Street and Mapunapuna Place remains closed.

Jenkins said damage estimates from the blaze weren't yet available. However, managers expect damages to be in the millions.

ABC Supply, a chain of stores, is the nation’s largest roofing and lumber company with approximately 700 locations. The company’s management said a temporary office trailer will be brought in to help with operations, but most of the business will run out of its Kapolei location in the Kalaeloa industrial area.
