A 49-year-old homeless man is in police custody Monday accused of stabbing a man in Kihei over the weekend.

Police arrested and charged Robert Prout today on suspicion of attempted murder.

At around 3:55 p.m. Sunday, police responded to a reported stabbing where a 36-year-old victim from Kahului was found in Waipuilani Park with injuries, police said.

He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

A preliminary investigation identified a male suspect who had fled from the scene.

Prout's bail is set at more than one million dollars.
