Rescue crews suspend search for free diver off Big Island's Kapoho Bay

Search and rescue crews on Thursday suspended their search for a 33-year-old woman who went missing while spearfishing with friends.

Big Island fire and U.S. Coast Guard officials had been searching since Sunday afternoon after learning that she had became separated from her friends in the strong current off Champagne Ponds in Kapoho.

Crews used helicopters, a boat, jet skis, free divers and ground crews to search the waters up and down the coast until nightfall, daily.

The woman has been identified as Amber Savant of Kona, described as 5’7” and 140 pounds with blonde hair. She was last seen wearing camouflage pants, a black tank top and dive weights. She was carrying a spear gun at the time.

Savant was last seen approximately 150 yards offshore near the outer reef break.
