HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Families have adopted most of the nearly 100 guinea pigs found abandoned in an Ewa Beach apartment.

The Grand Guinea Pig Adoption, held at Petco locations across Oahu, attracted dozens of pet lovers looking to add a new member to their family.

Earlier this month, nearly 100 guinea pigs were found abandoned at a Honolulu residence after their owner was evicted from his apartment. Following the eviction the guinea pigs were boarded and cared for by Poi Dogs and Popoki until adoption day.

Alicia Maluafiti, Poi Dogs and Popoki president, says that this kind of situation occurs more often today than ever and that it highlights our pet overpopulation challenges and the burden that it places on pet owners and our society.

The majority of the guinea pigs that were on site Saturday were adopted. Guinea pigs that weren’t adopted in the event will remain on site and sell for $15 a pair.
