2 suspects indicted in connection to violent Kailua store robbery

KAILUA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Two men who held up a Windward Oahu liquor store in broad daylight are now in custody.

30-year-old John Vea and 25-year-old Kevin Mercado-Nardo were indicted Friday for first-degree robbery.

On October 7, police say two men and a woman entered the Keolu Liqour Store at the Enchanted Lake Shopping Center in Kailua around 4:10 p.m. Officials say Vea attempted to use a pair of bolt cutters to cut the lock and chain from a gambling machine inside the store.

The female suspect allegedly locked the door so the store owner's wife couldn't run for help.

When the store's owner tried to stop the suspects, Mercado-Nardo allegedly put the owner in a choke hold.

Sources say Vea was identified after the owner got his license plate when they took off. Tipsters helped authorities identify Mercado-Nardo.

No word on any leads of the female suspect.
