KAILUA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

For Bri, an afternoon jog turned into an exercise in bravery.

The Kailua resident, who asked we not identify her further for privacy reasons, was running along Kailua Road on Wednesday afternoon when she saw a man snatch a Japanese tourist’s purse.

"I just started running and screaming, "Thief! Thief! Help! Help!"' she recalled.

Bri, the victim and her companion, and others gave chase down Mahealani Lane.

That’s where the suspect ditched the purse. The tourists stopped and retrieved the purse. But Bri continued the pursuit.

"I'm like, ‘There's no way. I'm going to get this guy, even if the woman doesn't press charges,’" she said.

The ensuing chase went through the residential back streets of Kailua towards the Enchanted Lake side of town. Bri dialed 911 and told the operator where she was. Along the way, a woman driving a car stopped to aid in the pursuit.

"I actually jumped in her car several times when he was getting mixed up in traffic," Bri said.

Thanks to Bri's pursuit, officers were able to arrive and make the arrest at Wanaao Road and Auwina Street.

The suspect has been identified as Tarek Gopaul,

The Honolulu Police Department praised Bri for her quick thinking and bravery.

"It's an act of heroism," said HPD Major Ryan Borges.

Bri sees it differently.

"I'm not a hero, I'm a mother, and this is my home. You can't come here and take from us".
