Japanese tourist targeted by thieves in Kailua

KAILUA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

For the second time in six days, a thief targeted another Japanese tourist in Kailua on Wednesday.

A nearby surveillance camera captured a portion of the chaotic scene. Honolulu police said the 29-year-old tourist was on her bicycle around 3 p.m. on Kailua Road when a man came up and stole her purse from the front basket of her bike.

The victim and two good Samaritans chased the suspect until he dropped the purse.

Police later arrested 45-year-old Tarek Gopaul on Wanaao Road for second-degree theft and two contempt of court warrants. His case was later classified as a fourth-degree theft.
